Almost there! Just two days until the gala. Get your ticket before it’s too late! Today’s Shoutout: “TURF: A Mini Golf Project” 2016 Image: “Practice Mat”, Besler & Sons ⛳️ @beslerandsons “TURF: A Mini Golf Project” invites nine architect teams to explore the meaning of terrain and territory in Los Angeles through the architecture of mini-golf. The mini-golf course becomes a playful trope of the city of Los Angeles, articulated through artificial terrains, winding territories and fantastical architecture. “TURF” was launched in 2015 as an open call for designers and artists to design a single architectural obstacle that investigates a contemporary Los Angeles condition. TURF Architect Teams: Besler & Sons, Endemic, G!LL!S, Heyday Partnership, [Andrea Kamilaris, Brian Koehler, Drew Stanley], Knowhow Shop, Kyle May, Ordinary Architecture,TAG-LA. #installation #newsitesandscenarios#spacemaking #curatingarchitecture #publicarchitecture #madeinla#LAarchitecture #silverlake #experimentalarchitecture
Only 3 days until the gala! Get your ticket through the link in bio. Every ticket includes a complimentary one year membership to M&A providing exclusive access to events and installations throughout 2018! Today’s Shoutout: “La Cage Aux Folles” 2014 By Warren Techentin Architects @wtarch La Cage aux Folles explores the craft of pipe bending in architecture and joins form, computational procedures, and fabrication processes. Each element of the composition becomes a participant with numerous roles to play: shape, structure, shear, ornament, pattern, history. Arrayed in a circle, the rods become a system which defines a thin enclosure which serves as safe haven from the harsh forces of nature outside. #installation #newsitesandscenarios#spacemaking #curatingarchitecture #publicarchitecture #madeinla#LAarchitecture #silverlake #experimentalarchitecture
Taking a break from our countdown to share the special artist tote bag by @tanyabrodsky, who is featured in our 2018 exhibition Privacies Infrastructure with @erinbesler @gjs1933 and #fionaconnor. Co-curated by @aurora__tang and @jiagu. Come grab yours at our gala and support our upcoming project! Link for tix in bio ☝🏽
In just 5 days, join us at the gala to reflect on the more than twenty site-specific installations produced by M&A. Today’s Shoutout: “Bloom” 2011-2012 Doris Sung, Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter, Matthew Melnyk @dosustudio Bloom is a 20’ tall metal flower that explores the possibilities of a thermally responsive surface which reacts to both the change in temperature and direct solar radiation. When the temperature of the metal is cool, the surface appears as a solid object. Once the afternoon heat penetrates the metal, the panels of custom woven bimetal adjust and fan out to allow for airflow and increase shade potential. #installation #newsitesandscenarios#spacemaking #curatingarchitecture #publicarchitecture #madeinla#inflatables #inflatablearchitecture#inflatablestructure #LAarchitecture #silverlake #experimentalarchitecture
Only 6 days until Nov. 11! Come celebrate with us at the M&A gala this Saturday. Today’s shoutout: “Light Frames” 2010-2011 By Gail Peter Borden (@gpborden ) ‘Light Frames’ is created using component-based structural frames that combine to create complex geometric forms. Borden makes a conscientious effort to emphasize the method of fabrication by truthfully exposing joints and materials. The resulted layering of systems produces an ephemeral array of light effects as the courtyard transitions with the sun throughout the day. #installation #newsitesandscenarios #spacemaking #curatingarchitecture #publicarchitecture #madeinla #LAarchitecture #silverlake #experimentalarchitecture
Seven days until we celebrate and reflect on M&As past and future Today’s shoutout: “Phalanstery Module” 2008 By Jimenez Lai (@0super of @_bureauspectacular) This installation grew from the hypothesis that in zero-gravity, architecture has no orientation – i.e., walls, ceilings and floors become obsolete and all surfaces are usable. Without gravity, all surfaces can be occupied. The installation is a constantly rotating structure which visitors are able to approach and use differently every time. Thanks to the amazing team Nick Blake, Jenna Didier, Oliver Hess, Peri Shefik, Stephany Stamatis, Arianna Lapenne, Blair Ellis, Linda Wei, Mishal Hashimi, Lily Sparks, Brian Janezcko, Paul Adam, Deus Xavier Scott, Nan Wolman, Eddy Sykes, Joanne Bloomfield, Dan Gottlieb, Kaveh Arbab, Libby McInerny, Linda Graveline, Samantha Gottlieb, Emmanuel Gonzalez, Elizabeth Anderson, Kellene Kaas, Josh Avina, S. Bennett, Daniel Stehr, Tulay Atak, Janine Sanchez, Lance Wilson, Alberto Miyares, Coco Conn, and special thanks to Lukasz Kos for being the man. #installation #newsitesandscenarios #spacemaking #curatingarchitecture #publicarchitecture #madeinla #LAarchitecture #silverlake #experimentalarchitecture
Countdown! Eight days until our gala! On Nov. 11, we will celebrate and reflect on the amazing community that helped build M&A, with a special moment to remember and honor Oliver Hess. Today’s shoutout: “Bubbles" 2006-2007 Bubbles was created by Foxlin (Michael Fox and Juintow Lin), NONDesigns (Miao Miao and Scott Franklin) and Brand Name Label (Gabriel Renz) with Axel Kilian, Darius Miller, and numerous talented volunteers. The interactive installation is a spatially adaptable pneumatic environment at an urban scale. The installation consists of large air-bags or “bubbles” that inflate and deflate in reaction to visitors pushing or bumping the lower inflated volume of each pair. As visitors enter and move through the installation, they must navigate through the lightweight 8’ diameter spheres that fill the space. #installation #publicarchitecture #LAarchitecture #silverlake #experimentalarchitecture
14 years, 20 exhibitions, one vibrant community For the 10 days leading up to our gala, we’re reminiscing on the incredible projects we’ve created over the years. Today’s shoutout: “Maximillian’s Schell” by @ball_nogues_studio June 2005 – Jan 2006 A golden “black hole” transformed our Silver Lake neighborhood for over six months. Made out of 512 tinted mylar pieces, this tensile structure and canopy became the test-piece for their award-winning installation at @momaps1. This Saturday, @ball_nogues_studio will be joining us to celebrate the remarkable community of creatives that made this exhibition possible! #popup #radical #installation #publicspace #publicarchitecture #LAarchitecture #silverlake #madeinla #creativespace #experimentalarchitecture
